Whether you are pricing an extension, planning a garage wall, budgeting for a garden room or estimating materials for a new build, this calculator helps you work out likely quantities quickly using standard UK estimating assumptions.

You can enter metric or imperial measurements, subtract doors and windows, add wastage, include optional costs, and use advanced mode for additional wall sections.

It is ideal for planning and budgeting, but should not replace structural drawings, Building Regulations checks, engineer specifications or manufacturer guidance.

Pro Tip: For simple straight walls, 5% wastage is often reasonable. For projects with many cuts, openings, corners or reclaimed bricks, increasing wastage to 8–10% can prevent under-ordering.

How to Use the Cavity Wall Calculator

Start by choosing Metric or Imperial units.

Enter the main wall dimensions. If using imperial mode, the calculator converts feet and inches into metres automatically.

Use the Openings section to subtract doors, windows or other voids from the wall area. This improves accuracy for bricks, blocks, insulation and render totals.

Under Wall Specification, choose:

• Outer leaf brick type
• Inner leaf block type
• Insulation option
• Render finish

You can also use Custom brick or block rates if your chosen materials differ from standard UK estimating averages.

Choose a wastage percentage to allow for cuts, breakages and ordering tolerance.

Use Optional Costs to estimate likely material spend.

In Advanced Mode, add extra wall runs for extensions, garages, stepped walls or split elevations.

Results Explanation

Once calculated, the tool shows:

Gross Wall Area

Total wall area before deductions.

Openings Area

Combined area of windows, doors and other voids.

Net Wall Area

Final usable wall area after openings are removed.

Bricks Required

Estimated quantity for the external leaf.

Blocks Required

Estimated quantity for the internal leaf.

Insulation Required

Estimated insulation coverage area.

Wall Ties

Approximate tie quantity using a standard estimating rate.

Mortar Required

Estimated mortar volume in cubic metres.

Render Area

Render coverage for one or two selected sides.

Estimated Cost

Combined total based on any prices entered.

Cost Per m²

The estimated materials cost divided by the final wall area.

How This Calculator Works

This calculator is designed as a fast material estimator rather than a structural design tool.

It works mainly from wall area, then applies standard coverage rates and wastage allowances.

What Does Not Currently Change the Maths

Some fields are included for planning convenience but do not currently alter totals:

• Insulation thickness/type (except “None”)
• Cavity width
• Joint thickness

For example, selecting 50mm or 125mm insulation does not change the insulation area total in this version. The calculator estimates insulation using final wall area rather than board counts, thermal values or cavity design.

How the Maths Works

Step 1: Wall Area

Wall area is calculated as:

$A = L \times H$A=L×H

All additional wall sections are added together.

Step 2: Openings Removed

Each opening area is deducted from the gross wall area.

Step 3: Net Wall Area

$A_{net}=A_{gross}-A_{openings}$Anet​=Agross​−Aopenings​

Step 4: Apply Wastage

$Factor = 1 + \frac{Waste\%}{100}$Factor=1+100Waste%​

Step 5: Material Quantities

Bricks:

$Bricks=A_{net}\times60\times Factor$Bricks=Anet​×60×Factor

Blocks:

$Blocks=A_{net}\times10\times Factor$Blocks=Anet​×10×Factor

Wall ties:

$Ties=A_{net}\times2.5\times Factor$Ties=Anet​×2.5×Factor

Mortar:

$Mortar=A_{net}\times0.02$Mortar=Anet​×0.02

Rounded totals are then displayed.

Ignoring Openings

Large windows and doors can significantly reduce material quantities.

Using It as a Structural Tool

This calculator estimates materials only. It does not design the wall.

Underestimating Wastage

Ordering exact theoretical totals often leads to shortages.

Assuming Thickness Changes Totals

Insulation thickness labels are descriptive in this version unless future upgrades are added.
