Turf Calculator

Work out how many rolls of natural turf to buy, including your chosen wastage allowance and material cost.

Units

Measure your lawn

Add separate, non-overlapping lawn areas. All sections use the same roll coverage and wastage allowance.

Material settings

Use the coverage stated by your supplier.

Enter your own allowance for trimming and offcuts. Set to 0% for no extra turf.

Turf cost (optional)

Leave blank to calculate quantities only.

Your turf estimate

Enter your lawn measurements, then calculate.

Use this turf calculator to work out how many rolls of natural turf to buy for your lawn, including an allowance for cutting. Add a supplier price for an estimated turf cost.

PRO TIP: Prepare the ground before arranging delivery so you can lay the turf promptly on arrival. Follow your supplier’s timing advice, especially in warm weather.

How to use this turf calculator

  • For a rectangle or square, enter length and width. For a circle, measure the diameter straight across the centre, edge to edge.
  • Split an L-shaped lawn into two rectangles and use Add lawn section. Keep the sections separate so no area is counted twice.
  • For a lawn containing beds or paving, subtract those areas from the total and enter the result under ‘I know the area’. For a triangle, multiply its base by the perpendicular height and divide by two, then enter that area.
  • Check the supplier’s coverage per roll; the default is 1 m². Choose Metric for metres and m², or Imperial for feet and ft². If adding a price, select the matching price basis.

Understanding your results

Order the number of rolls shown. The calculator includes your chosen allowance and rounds up to complete rolls. The estimated turf cost is based on those complete rolls.

How the maths works

Rectangle area = length × width. Circle area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)². The calculator adds all lawn sections before applying your allowance.
Rolls to buy = combined lawn area × (1 + allowance ÷ 100) ÷ coverage per roll, rounded up to a whole roll.
Example: a 6 m × 4 m lawn is 24 m². With 10% extra, it needs 26.4 m². At 1 m² per roll, buy 27 rolls. At an illustrative £5 per m², the turf cost is £135.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not add another allowance to the result: your chosen percentage is already included.
Convert inches to decimal feet before entering your measurements. For example, 6 ft 6 in is 6.5 ft, not 6.6 ft.

FAQs

How much extra turf should I order?

For a straightforward lawn with few cuts, 5% may be enough; curves and obstacles can justify 10% or more. Supplier guidance varies between 5% and 10%. This calculator starts at 10%, which you can change to suit the job.

How much lawn does one roll cover?

Many turf suppliers sell rolls covering 1 m², but check the coverage of the product you are buying. Use the stated coverage rather than calculating it from approximate roll dimensions.

Does the estimate include laying the turf?

No. It covers turf only. Budget separately for delivery, ground preparation, topsoil and laying. If you need to add soil before laying, use our topsoil calculator to estimate how much to buy. Use a VAT-inclusive supplier price if you want VAT included in the estimate.
